BACKGROUND

Each year, millions of products are brought into DICK’s Sporting Goods and moved throughout the store to reach our athletes. Store teammates manage these essential operations, which form the foundation of our business; without them, we can’t keep our athletes happy.

CHALLENGE

For years, store Teammates relied on outdated applications or no technology at all to manage inventory and stockrooms, resulting in inefficiencies that led to lost sales, longer fulfillment times, holes on the sales floor, and a poor shopping experience for Athletes. Due to the lacking systems this poorly affected online and in-store sales as well as Athlete and Teammate satisfaction. Our product team was tasked with delivering and iterating on a solution that empowers store Teammates to manage stockrooms, have visibility to item location, ensure accurate stock levels, and conduct sales floor replenishment.

MY ROLE

  • Sole Product Designer on team

  • Understanding the needs of store Teammates regarding complex and tedious processes.

  • Align closely with business stakeholders to ensure our technology met business goals and supported store operations.

  • Balance stakeholder expectations for technology with their established processes while delivering solutions that provide true value to Teammates.

Why are product location and stockroom accuracy important?

THE SOLUTION

When I joined the team, StockIt was an early stage application. The main functionality allowed Teammates to manage stockroom locations, lookup products, and enforce display compliance through RFID. The following were still top problems to be solved:

  1. Teammates and Athletes struggle to locate product..

  2. Teammates don’t know what product needs to be replenished on the sales floor.

  3. The RFID display compliance scanning process is taking Teammates too long to scan and print labels.

MORE ABOUT STOCKIT

As the Product Designer, I was responsible for iterating and designing for the entire product life-cycle. If there is a specific feature that you would like to learn more about or about my contribution, please reach out. The following diagram shows the entirety of the StockIt ecosystem. *Shows my contributions to the product while on the team.

Problem: Teammates and Athletes struggle to locate product.

“It is very helpful to find one on-hands that could be randomly set somewhere. Also, it is great for finding shoes and apparel in the back that don’t have a StockIt location.” -Kenneth, store 1579

“I wish the tool could be a bit more directional like a compass rather then just being somewhere in the vacinity of the item.” Nicole, 1361

Teammate StockIt Survey (200 responses)

Using current RFID technology to find products. Teammates utilize the RFID sled and can search for products (RFID enabled). As the Teammate moves closer to the product, audio and visual cues help to indicate the proximity to the item. This feature lives in the StockIt app but is also provided as a service in other apps to help in any scenario.

Q1. Where in StockIt would you expect to see a map of product location on the sales floor?

Q2. If given a map of product location on the sales floor in StockIt, what would you use this for?

Pain Points

After allowing stores to use the feature for a few months, we started to gather data on any financial gains.

The results show that this feature enables stores to find 7 million in products each month!

“Best idea this company has executed since I have been here, It is borderline perfect in my opinion.” -Michael, store 301

Has been extremely helpful in locating one off items that may have been misplaced in order to better serve our athletes. -Leslie, store 1129

Next up we are developing a more robust solution that will explore mapping to products in both Athlete and Teammate facing apps.
